Gravesham Sports Trust are closing in on the amount required to resurface Graveshams only multi-purpose sports pitch.
By Aaron Elliott, candidate for Riverview in the 2019 Local Elections.
Monday evening I attended the Gravesham Sports Trust committee meeting at Gravesend Rugby Club where Chair Simon Chapman was able to share status of the push towards achieving a goal set many years ago: Find the funding and replace Graveshams only astro turf pitch which was first laid in 1996 and which has already far exceeded its predicted lifespan.
No mean feat, the quotes received to replace the pitch range from £211,000 to £265,000!
I have worked with other fundraisers from Gravesend Ladies Hockey Club, Gravesham & Wellcome H.C., Meopham Ladies H.C., Old Gravesendians and Gravesend Rugby Club and Gravesend Grammar School over recent years to help add little by little to a pot that seemed to be growing at fingernail pace.
We have held Quiz nights, Race nights, Raffles, been along to Gung-Ho! and I led a 16 strong team that completed the London to Brighton charity cycle ride, which raised over £6000 on its own.
With all these efforts and from significant contributions -
total promised funds now stand at £197,000!
Hat tip to the brilliant ambition and determination by a few at Gravesham Sports Trust these past few years without which this would not have been possible.
This is a fantastic achievement that all of Gravesham and visitors to our borough can benefit from. With the finish so close, if you would like to help get them over that line then all donations no matter how small will be gratefully received - you just might make the difference!
Hopes are that resurfacing might be able to take place as early as this summer - which would be fantastic news if done in time for the free annual hockey youth camp they hold for Graveshams youngsters.
